Ultrasound and CT-guided biopsies using state-of-the-art technology.
When a lump has been detected or is suspected, or a certain disease is in the organs, doctors may want to determine the cause prior to removing large amounts of tissue, which requires surgery. The surgical alternative is to perform a biopsy, which removes only a small amount of tissue for examination by a pathologist to help develop or confirm a diagnosis. At East River Medical Imaging, our physicians can accurately remove tissue using ultrasound or CT guidance to help provide the exact location.
In an Ultrasound-guided biopsy, our physicians use ultrasound equipment to locate the area where tissue is to be removed. The Ultrasound wand, also known as a transducer, pulses out waves of sound into the body that are shown on a monitor. Using this “picture,” we can determine the best path to removing the tissue in question.
CT can assist in providing more enhanced images of a suspicious lesion. It helps to determine whether a tumor is truly solitary or not. CT can characterize the tumor and aid in the estimation of malignancy.
Because a successful biopsy depends on the expertise of the cytologist, we are also pleased to announce our association with Madeline Vazquez, MD, of CBL Path.
