MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most advanced ways to view precise details of the head, neck, spine, muscles, joints, and bones. It is also used to image the chest, abdomen and pelvis. The MRI uses a magnetic field to detect faint radio waves released by your body's atoms. These radio waves are displayed on a computer monitor and can be reproduced on films or high quality photographic paper.

East River is ACR Accredited to perform MRI studies. Our three GE 1.5 T MRIs have multiple dedicated coils, including a specialized breast coil to assess breast tissue and prosthetic breast implants. It also has a specialized endocavity coil for imaging the prostate gland. MR Angiography of arterial and venous structures of the head and neck assess occlusive diseases as well as congenital anomalies. We also perform pelvic and lower extremity MR Venography for assessment of thrombotic disease and MR angiography of the major thoracic, abdominal and pelvic arteries. MR angiography of the extremities is now possible with a dedicated periperal vascular coil.

Our Open Air MRI features a .3 T magnet which delivers resolution and clarity superior to most other open MRI's. It is completely open on all sides, allowing for maximum patient comfort and access. Claustrophobic and large patients can be comfortably scanned without compromising imaging quality and detail. With three different MRI machines, we are able to customize the procedure based on your special needs.

During the MRI exam, you will be asked to rest motionless on a padded table for 30 to 90 minutes depending on the area of your body being scanned. The area of interest will be positioned in the center of the magnet. During the scan, you will hear faint hums and the thumping of radio waves. You will be in constant contact with a courteous, caring technologist and have a control button to alert the technologist, if the need arises.

No special preparation is necessary. You can continue to take all medication and follow your regular diet unless told otherwise.

Some MRI examinations require the use of a non-iodine containing injectible contrast material to increase the sensitivity of the examination and obtain additional information. This is injected into a vein using a very small needle. In some cases, an IV line will be left in place during the course of the exam. The decision to use this will be made by your referring physician and/or the radiologist.

We may ask you to wear a patient gown. Please do not enter the scan room with jewelry, watches, hairclips, keys, coins and other metal objects (including eye make-up which may contain metallic powders). Credit card and ATM card magnetic codes will be erased by the MRI's magnetic field, and they should be kept away from the scanner room. Patients with metallic or electronic implants should alert the technologist prior to entering the scanning room as the MRI may adversely affect these items.

To help make your MRI experience a pleasant one, we have a music system you can listen to while undergoing your exam. Please feel free to bring a favorite CD or cassette.
