Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine involves injecting radioactive material into the blood stream.  Depending on the material injected the radioactivity is selectively taken up in certain tissues. Images of this uptake can be generated through spatial detection of the radioactivity using a gamma camera.

Nuclear Medicine studies are useful for evaluating function and physiologic activity. Examples of Nuclear Medicine tests include:

  • HIDA scan to evaluate gallbladder function
  • Bone scan to evaluate bone turnover
  • Renal scan to evaluate kidney function
  • Sestamibi scan to look for parathyroid lesions
