Upper GI with Small Intestine

An Upper GI Study with a Small Bowel Follow Through uses fluoroscopy (video x-rays) to detect abnormalities in the esophagus, stomach and small intestine. Images are taken after barium, a liquid contrast, is orally ingested. The duration of the study is variable, depending on the time necessary to fill the entirety of the small bowel. An exam can take between 45 minutes and 4 hours to complete.

Upper GI with a Small Bowel Follow Through Preparation: Do not eat or drink anything 12 hours prior to the exam.
